SHORT DOC: JON SCHLEUNING - ARCHITECT

AFO 2024 Honored Citizen Award recipient Jon Schleuning is profiled in our latest short documentary.

Jon Schleuning has been instrumental for nearly 50 years in raising public awareness of architecture and its impact on environments. Jon, a proud born-and-raised Oregonian, has exhibited great leadership deeply rooted in the values of Portland and the Pacific Northwest. He received the 2014 Medal of Honor from the American Institute of Architects’ Northwest & Pacific Region and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. His work spans professional, civic, and volunteer engagements that continue to impact the region in numerous ways.

Jon is most prominently associated with co-founding SRG Partnership, Inc. His passionate, high-energy direction has produced a team-based approach that consistently advances results combining design excellence with experience, function, performance, and context. His many projects include the Oregon Coast Aquarium, the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, and the Mount St. Helens Visitor’s Center. Notably, the Portland International Airport prior to the current renovations bears Jon’s transformational influence. Through his active leadership in the 1980’s, PDX pioneered the Oregon Market concept, featuring locally-made products at market prices. This daring new strategy very quickly attained unprecedented economic success, making PDX a regional gateway and model for other airports nationwide.

Civically, Jon has challenged tradition to integrate solutions that elevate the human spirit, catalyze communities, and reduce our carbon footprint for individual structures and district-wide scales. His innovative mark is evident in the design and evolution of the Portland Downtown Plan, which he accomplished through a mayoral appointed position. He served on numerous committees and review boards, and advised leaders on projects that led to Pioneer Courthouse Square and the Arts District, including the Portland Art Museum, Oregon Historical Society, and Portland’5 Center for the Arts. His voice ensured design and architectural expertise were present in these specific civic initiatives.

In addition to these accomplishments, Jon dedicated his leadership to design and civic focused organizations, including the AIA, the City Club of Portland, and as a founding member of the Architecture Foundation of Oregon. We are proud to have the opportunity to honor such an impactful member of our community. - Architecture Foundation of Oregon

Branded Short Film Series Tells the Story

We're excited to share this special project. It’s three short films in a triptych, created as scripted brand stories for Portland Piano International's annual concert series, SOLO. Each film follows a different character - three strangers that unwittingly cross paths before a concert. Below is a behind-the-scenes breakdown of the development and production of the three films, and the short film triptych. #brandedcontent #BrandedEntertainment #brandedshorts #shortfilms

Short Doc: Lillian Pitt - AFO 2022 Honored Citizen Video

This short documentary on Native American artist, Lillian Pitt, was commissioned by the Architecture Foundation of Oregon.

Every fall, the Oregon architectural and building community comes together to celebrate the work and legacy of some of our most impactful contributors. This year the Architecture Foundation of Oregon celebrated Lillian Pitt who has helped shape the state of Oregon through her work as an artist, mentor, and advocate. Lillian was born on the Warm Springs Reservation and is of Warm Springs, Wasco, and Yakima descent.

Lillian’s art has been at the heart of numerous building projects across the state and around the world. Many structures around the Pacific Northwest have been elevated by Lillian’s work. With the Confluence project, she designed the Welcome Gate for the Vancouver Land Bridge; her art also adorns Portland Tri-Met stations, the Native American Student Center at Portland State University, as well as sites in Sapporo, Japan.

Telling the story of her ancestors through her art – whether large-scale public art installations or smaller pieces of intricately designed jewelry – Lillian is an artist whose work is all around us. But her impact is not limited to the pieces she has produced. Lillian is a deeply committed mentor to numerous Indigenous artists from across the Pacific Northwest. By encouraging and cultivating the next generation of Native American artists, Lillian is ensuring that the Indigenous story of Oregon is remembered and honored.

Art is an essential part of our built environment. From public installations and sculptures to masks or jewelry, Lillian works at every level of scale. We are inspired by her ethic to consider how we might make an impact at every scale and medium we work with.
